Hello Basketball Nerds!
I come to you from the Toronto Raptors newsgroup seeking your nerd
knowledge. The regs in the Raptor newsgroup have let me down. It turns out
that nobody in there really knows much more about the game than me. It's not
surprising, new franchises usually breed fans that are mostly interested in
the local team not the league and game as a whole.
The Raptors once again, like for the 10th time in their brief and stormy
history, are at a crossroads.
Number 1 is who will succeed Lenny Wilkens as the Raptors head coach. I
want to know from guys who know their stuff who you think the top coaching
prospects are for the Raptors job. If you were Glen Grunwald who would be on
your list - who are the assistants in the league you think are ready to
become the next Rick Carlisle, who of the existing NBA head coaches should
they move would be good in T.O., which college coaches might make great NBA
coaches. I need information.
If you ask a Raptor fan, the best they can come up with is Jeff Van Gundy,
then they just throw up their hands.
Raptors ownership is not likely to hire Van Gundy who will command big money
while still owing 5 million to KoalaMan. The rumor is that Paul Silas is
high on the Raptors list. I like the guy but Job #1 with this team is
breathing some fucking life into it and most importantly into its franchise
player player Vince Carter. This team is about as soft a team as any team
could be. Carter flourished under
Butch Carter, as did Tracy McGrady, Carter needs this kind of coach,
somebody who will kick his ass, get in his grill, challenge him. Much of
Carter's deterioration is definitely related to Wilkens, just the wrong type
of coach for Vince. So when considering any coach for the Raptors job you
have to consider which coach is best equipped to make Vince Carter his
special project and get him to be the player he can still be. Is Paul Silas
that kind of guy? I think he's too old myself. I'd like a hungry
younger coach, either an assistant working for another team or a recently
retired player, to come in to Toronto and just put his blood, sweat and
tears into the job. Who are those guys?
Brian James when he was an assistant in Toronto seemed to be a hungry guy
and definitely a student of the game. Not sure he is he fiery leader this
team desperately needs though. Somebody mentioned Terry Porter - what the
skinny on him as a coach?
Please give me your top 5 NBA coaching prospects keeping in mind the job
they will be taking is the Toronto Raptors' one.
Raptors could be battling for the Eastern Conference this time next year if
things go right.
You add Lebron, Darko or Carmelo to what is still a decent lineup when
healthy and a dynamic new coach and they could be on their way again. Pick
the wrong coach, get dealt a bad hand in the Draft, and the Raps could be
bottom feeders, mediocre at best, for a long time.
Thank you basketball nerds!
Before I leave............To My American cousins...................
I am embarassed by the cowardly frog Prime Minister's decision not to stand
behind the United States in this war on Iraq, I encourage all American
sports fans to boo the Canadian anthem whenever a Canadian team plays on
American soil. I encourage American business when possible to find an
American company to send its business to rather than a Canadian one. This is
the only way many Canadians indoctrinated by a socialist elite and
education system from birth may finally wake up and realize that they live
in a country that stands for nothing. Canada is 'Seinfeld' - a country about
nothing. A disgrace.
We will take good care of Lebron though, i can assure you of that.
